Description This paper looks at the role of rural finance/microfinance in enhancing smallholder agricultural productivity and in reducing rural poverty and hunger in Asia and the Pacific. Based mainly on the research undertaken by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), it also analyses the impact of financial crisis on rural/microfinance. Finally, it highlights some of the innovations that have the potential to help smallholders enhance their access to rural/microfinance, which will help them increase agricultural productivity, benefit from new market opportunities and deal with increasing risks and vulnerability. The paper was presented at the IFAD-APRACA FinPower Regional Policy Forum-Consultation on Rural Finance Innovations and Emerging Rural Finance Issues, 13-16 December 2011, Bangkok.
