Host: Nepal rastra bank

Welcome to kATHMANDU!

About FinPower

In 2007, The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) provided APRACA with a five-year Technical Assistance Grant to implement the Regional Programme of Accelerating the Financial Empowerment of Poor Rural Communities in Asia and the Pacific through Rural Finance Innovations, dubbed as the APRACA FinPower Programme.

The APRACA FinPower Programme includes activities such as the conduct of policy and dissemination forums, pilot testing, technical support, training, exposure visits and publications.

About the Forum

The focus of this year’s FinPower Regional Dissemination forum is on Integrating Clean and Renewable Energy and Environmental Sustainability Components into Rural Financing.

National policies on clean energy, renewable energy and energy efficiency, coupled with policies on environmental protection, preservation and sustainability have significant impact on achieving national development goals and improving quality of life. The efficient integration of these policies by financial institutions into their rural financing programmes for a variety of applications like small irrigation, production, drying, post-harvest processing and power generation for home and entrepreneurial use is undoubtedly a boon to farmers and their respective countries as a whole in the long term.

The forum is one of the mechanisms for APRACA member institutions to share their experiences and lessons learned on the subject as well as innovations in integrating national energy and environment policies into their rural financing schemes. These experiences and innovations shall be synthesized into a regional paper and the recommendations shall form part of the basis for an APRACA regional strategy on the issue as well as additional support to respective country policies.

Participating institutions are expected to prepare and present a paper on the topic, following the suggested outline in Annex 4.

Study Visit

The field visit site is the Daunne Khola Micro Hydro Project, situated at Pinthali of Mangaltar Village Development Committee (VDC), Kavrepalanchok district. The site is about 67 kms south east from Kathmandu, of which 65 km is motorable and 2 kms of exciting walk along the hilly road, with panoramic viewing of beautiful mountains and hills, sceneries, rivers and typical rural lifestyle. It takes about 2 and half hours to reach the site including walking.

The study visit includes observation of a micro hydropower project with 12 kilowatt capacity, owned and operated by the local community. About 125 households have been benefiting from the project.

The visit also includes observation of biogas plants and improved cooking stoves in the same village along the roadside on the way back to the hotel.
